Electric energy prices in Poland arise from economic conditions and a range of legal regulations which aim at ensuring budget receipts and supporting the development of electric energy generation sources based on unconventional technologies. The basic legal acts shaping the electric energy trade market in Poland are:

 

• The Energy Law Act - regulating the basic principles of the relation between the consumer and the energy company as well as basic obligations of the energy company related to, first and foremost, the obligation of supporting generation sources generating electric energy in renewable energy sources and in the cogeneration technology (the system of yellow, red, violet and green certificates);

• The Excise Duty Law - establishing the amount of excise duty for each 1 MWh of the energy sold;
• The VAT Law - establishing the manner of settlement and amount of the value added tax for electric energy.
